India has achieved a major milestone in fertilizer self-reliance, with India P&K fertilizer production touching a record 15.76 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) in January 2026, the highest monthly output ever recorded, according to the Department of Fertilizers.
The surge in India P&K fertilizer production includes key products such as Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and NPK fertilizers, reflecting the impact of sustained policy reforms and targeted government support to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity.
Policy Support Driving India P&K Fertilizer Production
The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers attributed the record output to industry-friendly policy measures, capacity expansion in both public and private sector units, and strategic interventions to stabilise raw material supply.
According to the Department of Fertilizers, the government’s focus on structural reforms and investment incentives has enabled fertilizer manufacturers to operate at optimal capacity.
To safeguard domestic production against global supply disruptions and price volatility, the government has entered into long-term supply agreements with resource-rich countries. These partnerships have ensured steady availability of critical raw materials, allowing fertilizer plants to maintain uninterrupted operations.
Nutrient-Based Subsidy Supporting India P&K Fertilizer Production
Another major contributor to the record output has been the effective implementation of the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) policy. Timely subsidy disbursal has provided financial certainty to manufacturers, helping them manage input costs and plan production more efficiently.
Officials said the policy environment has encouraged fertilizer companies to expand existing facilities and invest in new manufacturing units.
Boost to Fertilizer Availability and Food Security
The Ministry said the record production is expected to strengthen fertilizer availability during the peak agricultural season, supporting farmers and improving food security.
The achievement also marks an important step in India’s broader push toward fertilizer sector self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta) by reducing import dependence and improving supply chain resilience.
