India Urea Import: NFL Secures 2.03 Million Tonnes Amid Strong Supplier Response
India’s urea import market received a major boost as National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) finalized the purchase of 2.03 million tonnes of urea following its 2 September 2025 tender. The order is divided between 1.01 million tonnes for the west coast and 1.02 million tonnes for the east coast, ensuring balanced distribution across the country.
Global suppliers responded enthusiastically, leading to oversubscription beyond the 2 million tonnes limit. To avoid congestion at Indian ports, NFL capped the final award at 2.03 million tonnes instead of increasing it to 2.5 million tonnes. This step ensures smooth delivery and timely availability for farmers during the critical Kharif season.
Aditya Birla Trading offered the lowest prices, supplying 300,000 tonnes at $464.70 per tonne (CFR) to the west coast and 300,000 tonnes at $462.45 per tonne (CFR) to the east coast. These rates reflect current global market trends and NFL’s strategy to secure cost-effective fertilizer.
This India urea import demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting farmers, preventing shortages, and strengthening the domestic fertilizer supply chain. With the tender finalized, east and west coast ports can handle deliveries efficiently, and farmers across India will now receive urea on schedule.
The strategic import also helps stabilize crop production, safeguard rural incomes, and ensure food security during the high-demand Kharif season.
