Paradeep Phosphates Limited (PPL) is set to strengthen its production base at Paradeep, Odisha. The company will commission a new sulphuric acid plant with 2.0 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) capacity in October 2025. In addition, phosphoric acid capacity will increase from 0.5 MMTPA to 0.7 MMTPA by September 2026.
Boosting Self-Reliance in Fertilizer Inputs
Sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid are key raw materials for making DAP and NPK fertilizers. With these projects, PPL will:
-
Cut dependence on imports.
-
Improve cost efficiency through backward integration.
-
Build supply chain resilience to ensure smooth fertilizer production.
-
Align with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision in agriculture.
Sulphuric Acid Plant – October 2025
The upcoming 2.0 MMTPA sulphuric acid unit will support fertilizer production and generate captive steam and power. This will reduce energy costs and carbon emissions while improving operational efficiency.
Phosphoric Acid Expansion – September 2026
PPL is also expanding its phosphoric acid unit to 0.7 MMTPA. This step will strengthen raw material security, support higher DAP/NPK output, and reduce exposure to volatile global prices.
Strategic Importance
These expansions are a part of PPL’s long-term growth strategy. The projects will:
-
Secure critical raw materials.
-
Expand fertilizer output for rising farm demand.
-
Ensure affordable and timely nutrient supply for farmers.
-
Improve margins by reducing reliance on international markets.
Looking Ahead
With both plants coming online, PPL will gain stronger manufacturing efficiency, profitability, and sustainability. The expansions mark a decisive step towards building a self-reliant fertilizer ecosystem that supports India’s food security.
