Wheat Procurement Target 2025-26 Set at 30 Million Tonnes

Wheat procurement target 2025-26

The government has set a cautious wheat procurement target of 30 million tonnes for the 2025-26 rabi marketing season. This decision comes despite the Agriculture Ministry’s projection of a record-breaking wheat production of 115 million tonnes for the 2024-25 crop year, which spans from July to June. The marketing season begins in April 2025.

The minimum support price (MSP) for wheat for the upcoming season is fixed at Rs 2,425 per quintal. This move ensures a fair return for farmers. The procurement target was finalized after discussions with state food secretaries, as reported by PTI.

Procurement Trends Over Recent Years

Wheat procurement by the government has varied significantly in recent years, reflecting changes in crop yields and market conditions:

  • 2024-25 Season: Procurement reached 26.6 million tonnes, short of the 30-32 million tonne target but higher than the 26.2 million tonnes procured in 2023-24.
  • 2023-24 Season: Procurement stood at 26.2 million tonnes, well below the target of 34.15 million tonnes.
  • 2022-23 Season: Only 18.8 million tonnes were procured, far less than the 44.4 million tonne target.

These trends highlight the challenges in meeting procurement targets due to production levels, market dynamics, and logistical hurdles.

Wheat Cultivation Update

The 2024-25 wheat crop is progressing well, with favorable conditions reported in major agricultural regions. Wheat sowing is nearly complete, covering 31.9 million hectares. This strong start supports confidence in achieving the projected record production.

Role of Procurement Agencies

The Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state procurement agencies play a crucial role in ensuring farmers receive the MSP for their wheat. These agencies also secure adequate stocks for government welfare schemes, making procurement targets essential for food security.

Balancing Production and Procurement

Setting a conservative procurement target aligns with the government’s strategy to manage stocks efficiently and avoid market disruptions. While the target is lower than the record production estimate, it reflects a practical approach. Achieving this goal will depend on effective coordination between central and state agencies and favorable market conditions.

With a promising production outlook and a clear procurement strategy, the 2025-26 rabi marketing season aims to stabilize the wheat supply chain and support farmer welfare effectively.
