China Suspended Fertiliser Exports, India Faces Price Hike Ahead of Rabi

China Suspended Fertiliser Exports

New Delhi, October 21, 2025 (Fertilizer Field): India is preparing for higher fertiliser prices ahead of the rabi crop season after China suspended fertiliser exports from October 15, a senior industry official said.

China had resumed fertiliser exports earlier this year between May 15 and October 15 under strict inspection norms. However, the government has now halted exports until further notice, impacting both Indian and global fertiliser markets.

China Suspended Fertiliser Exports Covering Urea, DAP, and TMAP

The suspension includes specialty fertilisers such as TMAP (Technical Monoammonium Phosphate) and urea-based solutions like AdBlue, along with DAP and urea.

“China has closed the export window from October 15 not only for India but for the entire world market,” said Rajib Chakraborty, President of the Soluble Fertilizer Industry Association (SFIA).
“I believe the export suspension will continue for the next five to six months,” he added.

India’s Heavy Dependence on Chinese Fertiliser Exports

India imports about 95% of its specialty fertilisers—mainly phosphates like TMAP and AdBlue emission-control fluids—from China.

According to Chakraborty, specialty fertiliser prices, already high, could increase by 10–15% due to the suspension. India consumes around 2.5 lakh tonnes of specialty fertilisers annually, with 60–65% of demand during the rabi season from October to March.

Fertiliser Prices in India Likely to Stay Firm

The official said meeting demand won’t be an issue for the ongoing rabi season as traders have secured supplies through global agencies. However, fertiliser prices in India may still rise in the short term.

“If Chinese export curbs continue beyond March 2026, then it would be a concern,” Chakraborty said.
“This year’s rabi season may extend until March due to better water availability,” he added.

Limited Global Alternatives After China Suspended Fertiliser Exports

India has alternative suppliers from South Africa, Chile, and Croatia, but they can only meet limited product needs.

Industry experts say the government and importers are closely monitoring the situation as fertiliser prices in India could remain volatile until China resumes fertiliser exports.
