Fertilizer Availability India: No Shortage in Kharif and Rabi, Govt Says

Fertilizer Availability India

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda said fertilizer availability India remained adequate during Kharif 2025 and Rabi 2025–26 seasons. The government reported no shortage of chemical fertilizers across states, including Uttar Pradesh. Fertilizer availability India remained stable due to advance planning and supply monitoring.

The Minister shared this information in a written reply to Lok Sabha member Virendra Singh. He confirmed that key fertilizers such as urea, DAP, MOP, and NPK remained available across the country.

Government Monitoring of Fertilizer Supply

The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare estimates fertilizer demand before every cropping season. It prepares state-wise and month-wise projections.

Based on these estimates, the Department of Fertilizers allocates supplies. Authorities monitor fertilizer movement through the Integrated Fertilizer Management System (iFMS). This system helps ensure timely distribution across states.

IFFCO Production Increases

Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) increased its fertilizer production in 2024–25. Output rose from 88.93 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) in 2023–24 to 93.10 LMT in 2024–25.

Major plants at Kandla, Paradeep, Aonla, and Phulpur contributed to the production growth.

During April–January FY 2025–26, IFFCO produced 41.24 LMT of urea, compared with 40.66 LMT in the same period of FY 2024–25. The Minister said IFFCO met all production and supply targets assigned by the Department of Fertilizers.

Domestic Urea Capacity Expansion

The government continues to expand domestic fertilizer production capacity. Under the New Investment Policy (NIP)–2012, six new urea plants have started operations.

These include projects of:

  • Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited

  • Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited (HURL)

  • Matix Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited

  • Chambal Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited

India’s domestic urea capacity increased from 207.54 LMT in 2014–15 to 283.74 LMT in 2023–24.

The country recorded 314.07 LMT of urea production in 2023–24, followed by 306.67 LMT in 2024–25.

Government officials said proactive planning, capacity expansion, and digital monitoring systems have ensured uninterrupted fertilizer supply across India.
