Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are facing a serious fertilizer supply crisis in India as the Kharif sowing season progresses rapidly due to early monsoon rains. Both state governments have urgently appealed to the Central Government to address the situation and prevent disruptions in crop production.
Tamil Nadu Responds to Fertilizer Supply Crisis in India
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure the immediate supply of fertilizers to Tamil Nadu. With paddy cultivation advancing fast, the state has already covered 5.66 lakh hectares—10% more than the same period last year.
Despite good monsoon and sufficient water reserves, only about 57% of the allocated urea, DAP, MOP, and NPK Complex fertilizers were supplied from April to August 2025. To tackle the shortfall, CM Stalin demanded the urgent release of:
Urea: 27,823 metric tonnes (MT)
DAP: 15,831 MT
MOP: 12,422 MT
NPK Complex: 98,623 MT
In addition, he requested extra allocations for September 2025:
40,000 MT of urea
20,000 MT of DAP
20,000 MT of MOP
40,000 MT of NPK Complex
These measures are critical to maintaining agricultural output and supporting farmers’ livelihoods during the Kharif and Rabi seasons.
Karnataka Faces Fertilizer Shortfall Amid Supply Crisis
Randeep Singh Surjewala, AICC General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge, called on Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to urgently release 3.36 lakh metric tonnes of pending urea fertilizer to Karnataka.
With monsoon rainfall about 3% above normal this year, the Kharif sowing started earlier than expected. Farmers have already sown 81.85 lakh hectares out of the 82.50 lakh hectare target. However, a significant shortfall of 3.36 lakh MT of urea remains unresolved.
Surjewala highlighted that the Union Government is responsible for supplying fertilizers according to state needs. The nearly 50% reduction in urea supply from April to September 2025 has intensified the challenge for farmers. Karnataka Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy met the Union Minister to press for immediate action. Surjewala concluded that resolving the fertilizer supply crisis in India is essential to safeguard the agricultural sector.
