ICL water soluble fertilizer plant India has been launched in Maharashtra amid rising global supply disruptions caused by the ongoing West Asia war. The move aims to reduce India’s heavy dependence on imports of water-soluble fertilizers.
ICL, formerly known as Israel Chemicals Ltd, has set up the facility in Maharashtra. The company aims to reduce India’s heavy dependence on imports of water-soluble fertilizers.
India Imports 90% of Water-Soluble Fertilizers
India produces large volumes of nitrogen-based fertilizers like urea. However, it still imports nearly 90% of its water-soluble fertilizer requirements.
Water-soluble fertilizers dissolve completely in water. Farmers apply them through drip irrigation or spray them directly on crops. This makes them more efficient than traditional soil-applied fertilizers.
West Asia War Disrupts Fertilizer Supply Routes
The new plant comes at a critical time. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia have disrupted global trade routes.
The Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping corridor, is facing partial closure risks. A significant share of global fertilizer and raw material shipments passes through this route.
As a result, global supply chains are slowing down. Prices and availability are also under pressure.
Maharashtra Chosen as Strategic Location
ICL selected Maharashtra for the new plant due to its strong agricultural base. The state is one of the largest markets for water-soluble fertilizers in India.
The location also offers strong connectivity. It provides easy access to key farming regions across the country.
The facility spreads across seven acres (28,000 square meters). It will replicate ICL’s advanced production model used in Israel.
Plant to Produce High-Quality NPK Fertilizers
The unit will manufacture water-soluble NPK fertilizers. These are the same high-quality products currently exported from Israel.
ICL plans to scale production gradually. The company is targeting a capacity of around 30,000 tonnes in the coming years.
Focus on India Market with Export Potential
Nir Ilani, President of ICL’s Growing Solutions Division, confirmed that India remains a key priority market.
He said the company will first serve domestic demand. However, it may also explore export opportunities for surplus production.
This approach will help optimize capacity and expand global reach.
