New Delhi: India fertilizer gas supply has been increased to 90% of the six-month average consumption to protect urea production amid the ongoing Middle East war and energy disruptions.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, confirmed that the government implemented this decision from April 6 after securing LNG through spot purchases.
India Fertilizer Gas Supply Boosted Through LNG Spot Imports
To stabilize fertilizer gas supply, oil companies procured liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the spot market. This move comes as the Strait of Hormuz blockade continues to disrupt global energy flows.
Earlier, India fertilizer gas supply was reduced to around 60% due to the crisis. It was later increased to 75–80% using alternative sourcing. Now, improved LNG availability has enabled a further increase to 90%.
India Fertilizer Gas Supply Supported by Diversified LNG Imports
With LNG supplies from Qatar suspended, India has diversified sourcing to the US, Australia, and Russia. This diversification has strengthened fertilizer gas supply and reduced dependency on Gulf exports.
Additionally, gas supply to industrial and commercial sectors, including CGD networks, will increase by 10% from Monday.
Priority Sectors Get Full Supply Despite Energy Crisis
Even as fertilizer gas supply improves, the government continues to prioritize essential sectors. Domestic PNG and CNG supplies remain at 100% allocation.
Although LPG imports from Gulf countries are affected, domestic supply remains stable. Over 18 crore LPG cylinders have been delivered since March 1, 2026, with no shortages reported.
Commercial LPG Supply Recovers Gradually
Commercial LPG supply has reached 70% of pre-crisis levels. Since March 14, around 79,909 tonnes have been sold.
Meanwhile, 5-kg free trade LPG cylinders continue to be available at market price. Around 6.75 lakh cylinders have been sold since March 23.
Government Measures to Stabilize Fuel Supply
To manage demand and support fertilizer gas supply, the government has:
- Extended LPG refill cycles
- Promoted alternative fuels like kerosene and electric cooking
- Increased kerosene and coal allocation
Authorities have also taken strict action against hoarding:
- 100,000+ raids conducted
- 52,000+ cylinders seized
- 220 arrests made
Refineries Operating at High Capacity
All refineries are running at high capacity with adequate crude stocks. Fuel stations across India remain fully operational.
