India Cuts Fertiliser Import Dependence as Domestic Output Meets 73% of Demand in 2025

India fertiliser production

India significantly reduced its reliance on fertiliser imports in 2025, with domestic production meeting nearly 73% of total fertiliser demand, according to official data released by the Government of India.

The achievement marks a key milestone in India’s fertiliser security strategy and reflects sustained policy efforts to ensure uninterrupted availability of nutrients to farmers despite global market volatility.

Policy Push Strengthens Fertiliser Security

To stabilise supplies, the government has focused on long-term sourcing agreements for critical raw materials and diversification of import channels. These measures aim to reduce exposure to international supply disruptions while supporting consistent domestic production.

Officials said the strategy has helped cushion the impact of global price fluctuations and geopolitical uncertainties affecting fertiliser trade.

Domestic Fertiliser Production Shows Strong Growth

India’s domestic fertiliser production has recorded a steady upward trend over the past five years. Total output, including urea, DAP, NPKs, and SSP, rose sharply between 2021 and 2025, reaching a record high last year.

Growth has been driven by:

  • Commissioning of new fertiliser plants

  • Revival of previously closed units

  • Expansion of indigenous manufacturing capacity

  • Improved availability of raw materials

Together, these steps have strengthened the resilience of India’s fertiliser manufacturing ecosystem.

Domestic Focus Reduces Import Risks

The government said its continued focus on boosting domestic fertiliser production is aimed at ensuring timely availability to farmers while reducing dependence on volatile global markets.

Higher self-reliance also helps contain subsidy exposure and shields the agriculture sector from sudden international supply shocks.

Total Domestic Fertiliser Production in India (2021–2025)

YearProduction (lakh tonnes)
2021433.29
2022467.87
2023507.93
2024509.57

Outlook

With multiple expansion and revival projects underway, India fertiliser production capacity is expected to strengthen further. The government’s strategy signals a long-term shift toward greater self-sufficiency, supporting food security and farmer confidence.
