Chennai, November 5, 2025:
A suspected Madras Fertilizers ammonia leak from the government-owned Madras Fertilizers Limited (MFL) plant in Manali, Chennai, caused panic among motorists and residents on Tuesday night.
Police said people driving past the factory on the Manali Express Road reported a strong, pungent odor. Many covered their faces with cloths and bags to avoid inhaling the gas. Even traffic police officers at the MFL junction experienced breathing discomfort and used makeshift masks while regulating vehicles.
Officials Probe Source of Ammonia Leak at Madras Fertilizers
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and Manali police rushed to the spot after receiving complaints from nearby residents.
Preliminary reports indicated that ammonia, a raw material used in fertilizer production, may have escaped through an exhaust vent.
“Initial inspection suggests that the gas may have leaked from an exhaust unit. A detailed inquiry is underway to determine the cause and prevent recurrence,”
said a Pollution Control Board officer.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and authorities are monitoring air quality around the plant and nearby localities.
Safety Measures and Next Steps
The TNPCB has asked Madras Fertilizers Limited to submit a detailed safety report explaining the cause of the ammonia gas leak and preventive actions taken.
Officials continue to monitor ammonia levels in the air to ensure public safety.
Ammonia, widely used in fertilizer manufacturing, can cause eye irritation, coughing, and breathing issues when leaked in large quantities.
The Madras Fertilizers plant, located in Chennai’s Manali industrial area, plays a major role in fertilizer supply across southern India.
Public Response and Awareness
Local residents have urged authorities to ensure strict safety checks at fertilizer plants to prevent future leaks.
Environmental groups have also called for real-time monitoring systems in industrial zones to track toxic emissions.
The quick response from police and pollution control teams helped contain the situation before it escalated.
