OCP Morocco Maintenance Impacts Global Phosphate Supply

OCP Morocco phosphate plant with fertilizer production and stockpiles

OCP Morocco has announced early maintenance at several of its fertilizer plants, a move that could tighten global phosphate supply. The decision comes at a time when markets are already facing constraints due to raw material shortages and geopolitical disruptions.

OCP Group will begin maintenance activities next week, although it has not disclosed specific plant details. The planned work could impact up to 30% of OCP Morocco’s production capacity during the second quarter.

Morocco Phosphate Exports and OCP Production Capacity

Morocco remains one of the world’s largest exporters of phosphate fertilizers. Data shows that the country exported around 4.40 million tonnes of DAP, 2.71 million tonnes of MAP, and 2.98 million tonnes of TSP last year.

With OCP Group playing a dominant role in global phosphate supply, any reduction in output could influence international prices and availability, especially for key importing countries like India.

Raw Material Shortage Behind OCP Maintenance Decision

While OCP has not officially disclosed the reason for advancing maintenance, market sources point to tight supply of key raw materials such as sulphur and ammonia. These inputs are essential for phosphate fertilizer production.

Ongoing logistics disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz are driving the supply impact, as it serves as a critical global trade route. The effective closure and ongoing tensions in the region have restricted the flow of sulphur and ammonia, both heavily sourced from the Middle East.

Notably, the Middle East accounted for nearly 52% of Morocco’s sulphur imports last year, highlighting the region’s importance for OCP’s operations.

Weather Disruptions Add Pressure on Morocco Fertilizer Exports

In addition to supply constraints, adverse weather conditions earlier this year disrupted port operations in Morocco. These delays affected both production and export logistics, further tightening global phosphate availability.

As a result, the combination of maintenance shutdowns, raw material shortages, and logistical challenges is expected to keep phosphate markets firm in the near term.
