QatarEnergy has strengthened its global fertilizer presence by signing a long-term contract with Japan’s Mitsui. Under the QatarEnergy urea supply agreement, the state-owned producer will deliver 500,000 t/yr of urea to Mitsui for 20 years, starting January 2026. The agreement includes both prilled and granular urea, making it one of the largest bilateral supply deals between Qatar and Japan’s fertilizer industry.
To support rising demand, QatarEnergy is also developing a large urea production complex that is expected to be operational by 2030. Once commissioned, this project will double the company’s total urea capacity to 12.4mn t/yr, further boosting Qatar’s export capability. In recent years, Qatar has steadily expanded its presence in the Asian fertilizer market. Trade data shows Qatar exported slightly over 80,000t of urea to Japan between January and August 2024, while total deliveries reached 295,000t for the year. With the QatarEnergy urea supply agreement, Mitsui will now secure stable long-term supply, ensuring predictable availability for Japanese fertilizer blenders and traders.
This agreement is also expected to support QatarEnergy’s growth plans in clean ammonia, petrochemicals, and nitrogen fertilizers. Read more about global nitrogen expansion on our Ammonia & Urea News Page.
