Thailand Fertilizer Supply Stable Despite Middle East Tensions

Thailand fertilizer supply remains stable despite concerns about disruptions in global trade. Thailand fertilizer supply is currently supported by strong inventories and scheduled imports that will ensure adequate availability until August.

According to the Thai government, total fertilizer supply reached 1.52 million tonnes in January, providing a comfortable buffer for domestic demand.

Urea Stocks Sufficient for Farmers

The government said that urea stocks stood at about 320,000 tonnes, equivalent to 6.5 million bags. This quantity is sufficient to meet the country’s fertilizer demand for more than two months.

Thailand is also expected to receive around 100,000 tonnes of urea from Saudi Arabia, equal to nearly 2 million bags. This will increase the total urea availability to 8.5 million bags, which authorities say will be enough to meet farmers’ requirements until August.

Airin Panrit, deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, said the government is closely monitoring fertilizer supply and global developments.

Government Monitoring Middle East Situation

Thai authorities have instructed relevant agencies to track the evolving situation in the Middle East. The region is a major supplier of fertilizers to global markets.

Officials also warned fertilizer retailers against taking advantage of the geopolitical situation by raising prices excessively. Businesses found violating pricing rules could face legal action.

Concerns about fertilizer shortages emerged after the US-Israel-Iran conflict, which disrupted shipments from the Middle East Gulf. The region accounts for around 20 million tonnes of urea exports annually, representing about 35% of global seaborne trade.

Thailand imports most of its urea from the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia supplying around 1.1 million tonnes in 2025.

Alternative Supply Sources Available

Thailand can also secure additional urea from regional producers such as Malaysia and Brunei if required.

Officials have urged farmers not to panic or rush to stockpile fertilizers. Current supply levels remain adequate for the coming months.

Domestic Urea Prices Continue to Rise

Despite sufficient supply, domestic urea prices have started to increase due to stronger international offers.

Bagged granular urea prices rose to around 17,000 baht per tonne ($535/t) ex-warehouse on 6 March, up by 800 baht per tonne in one day.

Importers expect prices to rise further in the coming weeks. However, most traders believe current inventories are sufficient to meet near-term demand.

Thailand’s main rice planting season begins in May, coinciding with the southwest monsoon. Fertilizer demand is expected to increase from April onwards, giving farmers time to assess the market before making purchases.
