Urea shortage in Lakhimpur Kheri has caused serious trouble for farmers in the Phoolbehad area. Limited availability of fertilizer has affected routine agricultural work during a crucial period for rabi crops.
On Tuesday morning, farmers gathered at the Phoolbehad Cooperative Society from as early as 7 a.m. Long queues formed quickly as farmers waited to purchase urea.
Farmers Stand in Long Queues Despite Cold Weather
Cold weather did not stop farmers from waiting in line. Many stood for hours with no certainty of getting fertilizer. Farmers said they arrived early because stocks often run out quickly.
Virendra Jaiswal, a local farmer, said he joined the queue at 8 a.m. However, hundreds of farmers were already ahead of him. He said officials did not confirm whether enough urea was available for everyone.
Repeated Shortages Increase Farmer Stress
Another farmer, Mohan Lal, said he has been searching for urea for the past two days. He visited several centres but returned empty-handed each time. According to him, repeated shortages waste time and increase travel costs.
The ongoing urea shortage in Lakhimpur Kheri has raised concerns about crop health. Farmers fear delayed fertilizer application may reduce yields of wheat and other rabi crops.
Farmers Seek Immediate Action from Authorities
Farmers urged the local administration to improve fertilizer supply and distribution. They also asked officials to share clear information on stock availability. This step could help prevent overcrowding at cooperative centres.
Agriculture experts warn that fertilizer shortages during peak demand can hurt productivity. They stress the need for better planning and timely supply.
If the urea shortage in Lakhimpur Kheri continues, farmers say crop output and farm income could suffer.
