Bangladesh urea import plans received a boost after the government approved a proposal to procure 40,000 metric tonnes of bulk granular fertilizer from Saudi Arabia for the current fiscal year FY26. The move aims to meet the rising domestic demand for this critical agricultural input.
The approval came during the first meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase held on Tuesday at the Cabinet Division Conference Room in the Bangladesh Secretariat. Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed chaired the meeting.
Under the approved proposal, the fertilizer will be imported from SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company of Saudi Arabia as part of the 15th lot. The Ministry of Industries placed the procurement proposal.
The government has fixed the import price at US$390 per metric tonne. The total procurement cost stands at Taka 191.41 crore.
Officials said the Bangladesh urea import decision will help ensure timely availability of fertilizers during the upcoming cropping seasons. It will also support stable supplies amid global market volatility.
