Green Ammonia Project Spain: KBR to Design 200,000 tpy Plant

green ammonia project Spain

US-based engineering company KBR has secured a technology and engineering contract from Ignis to support a 200,000-tonnes-per-year green ammonia project in A Coruña, Spain. The agreement strengthens Spain’s growing green hydrogen and ammonia market.

KBR will deliver proprietary process design and pre-front-end engineering and design (pre-FEED) services. The work will assess the project’s technical and commercial feasibility. The facility will use renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen, which will then be converted into green ammonia.

Project Scope and Technology

The project will rely on renewable power to drive hydrogen production. The hydrogen will feed into an ammonia synthesis loop designed for high energy efficiency. KBR will deploy its low-capital-cost ammonia synthesis technology, which targets scalable and cost-effective green ammonia production.

KBR has designed or built more than 260 ammonia plants worldwide. This experience positions the company to support complex, first-of-a-kind green ammonia developments. KBR will also promote its H2ACT ammonia cracking technology as a complementary solution for hydrogen transport and downstream use.

Ignis Leads Permitting, Power and Offtake

Ignis, a Spanish renewable energy and infrastructure developer, will lead permitting, financing, and offtake arrangements. The company will also supply renewable electricity to the project site through power purchase agreements.

Ignis has placed Spain at the center of its hydrogen strategy. The company aims to align the project with domestic demand and European export opportunities.

Strategic Shift from Chile to Spain

The project follows Ignis’ decision to scale back a previously announced green hydrogen and ammonia development in Chile. Slower market development in Latin America prompted the shift earlier this year.

In contrast, Spain offers stronger policy support, access to EU funding, and rising offtake interest from the fertilizer and maritime sectors. These factors have encouraged faster progress toward engineering and investment decisions.

Outlook for Green Ammonia in Spain

Spain continues to attract early-stage green ammonia projects. Strong renewable resources and supportive regulation support this trend. With KBR’s engineering expertise and Ignis’ renewable portfolio, the A Coruña project moves closer to execution.
