Guyana Launches Major Ammonia–Urea Project Proposal for 2026 Deadline

Guyana ammonia urea project

The Government of Guyana has officially invited proposals for the design, engineering, construction, and operation of a new ammonia–urea plant at Wales on the West Bank of Demerara. This initiative forms part of the country’s growing industrial development plan under Phase II of its gas-to-energy strategy.

According to an advertisement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister, the selected EPC contractor must also secure a world-class technology licensor for the fertilizer complex. The government intends to allocate up to 20 MMCFD of natural gas from Phase II of the Wales pipeline to support the plant.

The upcoming facility, known as the Guyana Ammonia and Urea Plant (GAUP), is planned to produce 300,000 tonnes of fertilizer per year. It will operate as a public-private partnership, with financing sourced from private-sector investors. The latest EPC estimates suggest the project will cost no more than US$300 million.

The government expects the ammonia–urea plant to align with the commissioning of Phase II of the Gas-to-Energy project in 2027/2028, ensuring reliable gas feedstock for continuous production. GAUP will supply fertilizer to both local farmers and regional markets, including Northern Brazil and the Caribbean.

The core objective of GAUP is to reduce fertilizer costs across the region, strengthening agricultural competitiveness and improving food security. With rising global nitrogen prices, Guyana sees this project as a strategic opportunity to stabilize supply and become a regional fertilizer hub.

Interested firms must submit proposals to the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB). The final submission deadline is January 22, 2026.
