New Delhi, 30 September 2025 — Indian Fertilizer Consumption 2024-25 reached a record 70.70 million metric tonnes, marking the highest-ever demand in the country. While overall consumption rose strongly, the trends were mixed across different products — with urea, NP/NPK, and MOP showing significant growth, while DAP recorded a decline.
Indian Fertilizer Consumption Hits Record High in 2024-25
Urea: Production declined to 30.64 MMT (−2.4%) due to shutdowns and equipment issues at several plants, including Namrup and Kakinada.
DAP: Output fell sharply by 12.2% to 3.77 MMT, primarily due to high raw-material costs.
NP/NPK Complex Fertilisers: Production rose by 18.6% to 11.33 MMT, reflecting stronger domestic output.
SSP: Production increased by 16.8% to 5.18 MMT.
On a nutrient basis, nitrogen (N) production slipped marginally (−0.7%), while phosphorus (P₂O₅) increased by 4.5%.
Drivers Behind Rising Fertilizer Consumption in India
India reduced its reliance on imports in 2024–25. Urea imports fell by 19.8% to 5.65 MMT, while DAP imports dropped by 17.9% to 4.57 MMT. By contrast, imports of MOP surged by 23.4% to 3.54 MMT, reflecting higher potash demand. Imports of NP/NPK complexes also grew modestly by 2.5%. To partially offset the fall in DAP supply, India imported 406,000 MT of TSP.
Strong Growth in Consumption
Consumption continued its upward trajectory, despite production challenges. Based on DBT sales estimates:
Total nutrient consumption (N+P₂O₅+K₂O) reached 32.93 MMT (+7.5%).
Urea consumption rose to 38.77 MMT (+8.4%).
NP/NPK surged by 28.4% to 14.21 MMT.
MOP jumped 33.9% to 2.20 MMT.
DAP fell 14.2% to 9.28 MMT, with farmers increasingly using TSP and MAP as substitutes.
Overall, fertiliser product consumption reached 70.70 MMT, up 9.1% compared with 2023–24.
State-Wise Observations
Most states reported higher consumption of urea, NP/NPK, MOP, and SSP. However, DAP sales declined in a majority of states, except Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, and Uttarakhand.
Industry Outlook
Despite supply-side challenges, including international raw-material price volatility and equipment breakdowns at major plants, India’s fertilizer industry sustained production and met rising demand. Analysts expect policy support, plant reliability, and diversification of raw-material sourcing to remain critical in 2025–26.
