Indian NPK fertilizer imports December 2025 surged to a 14-year high, sharply lifting domestic inventories, according to government data. The spike in Indian NPK fertilizer imports December 2025 helped push stocks up by 327,400 tonnes during the month.
India imported around 577,000 tonnes of NPKs and NP fertilizers in December, compared with 118,000 tonnes a year earlier. This marked the highest monthly import volume since November 2011, based on Argus data.
Domestic production also increased. India produced nearly 1.12mn tonnes of NPK and NP fertilizers in December, up by almost 8pc year on year.
Sales remained broadly stable at about 1.36mn tonnes. Volumes slipped by less than 1pc compared with December 2024.
The stock build — calculated as production plus imports minus sales — stood at 327,400 tonnes for the month. As a result, total Indian inventories of NPKs and NPs reached an estimated 4.5mn tonnes on 1 January.
During the first nine months of the April–March 2025-26 fertilizer year, cumulative production climbed to nearly 9.27mn tonnes, up by 13pc from the same period last year. Imports totalled 3.30mn tonnes, more than doubling year on year, while sales rose marginally to 11.74mn tonnes.
