Petrobras Urea Project Brazil marks a major step toward fertilizer self-reliance.
State-run oil company Petrobras (PETR3.SA) announced that it will meet about 20 percent of Brazil’s total nitrogen fertilizer demand next year as three of its fertilizer plants restart operations.
Petrobras Resumes Operations at Three Fertilizer Plants
According to CEO Magda Chambriard, the company’s Bahia and Sergipe plants, both in Brazil’s northeastern region, are expected to supply 5 percent and 7 percent of the country’s total urea needs.
Meanwhile, Petrobras’ Paraná plant, located in southern Brazil, has already resumed production.
It will contribute around 8 percent of the national urea supply.
All three plants had been idle for several years before this restart.
Fertilizer Field Insight:
These combined operations will strengthen Brazil’s domestic fertilizer network and reduce dependency on imported urea, a vital crop nutrient.
Nitrogen Fertilizer Expansion in Mato Grosso do Sul
During an event in Bahia state, Chambriard confirmed Petrobras’ plan to resume construction of its Mato Grosso do Sul nitrogen fertilizer plant.
Once operational, the facility will add another 15 percent of Brazil’s nitrogen fertilizer supply.
“This plant is already under contract.
Once it’s completed, Petrobras will meet 35 percent of all nitrogen fertilizer demand in Brazil,” Chambriard said.
Petrobras Aligns With President Lula’s Industrial Policy
The Petrobras Urea Project Brazil supports President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s broader goal to rebuild Brazil’s fertilizer production capacity.
Lula has repeatedly urged Petrobras to reinvest in the fertilizer and petrochemical sectors to reduce the nation’s heavy import dependency.
“Through public policies led by the federal government and our shareholders, Petrobras recognizes its strategic role in ensuring fertilizer security for Brazil,” Chambriard said.
Fertilizer Field Insight:
By reviving domestic urea production, Petrobras strengthens both Brazil’s agricultural independence and its role in the global fertilizer market.
Outlook: Petrobras to Meet 35% of Brazil’s Nitrogen Demand
When the Mato Grosso do Sul facility becomes operational, Petrobras could meet more than one-third of Brazil’s nitrogen fertilizer needs.
Industry experts say the move will help stabilize domestic urea prices and reduce import costs.
Brazil currently imports most of its nitrogen-based fertilizers, making Petrobras’ investment crucial for food security and industrial sustainability.
