Ammonium Nitrate Seizure Triggers Statewide Checks on Fertilizer Dealers

Fertilizer and chemical businesses across the region now face strict checks. Security teams increased ammonium nitrate inspections after the seizure revealed a larger inter-State network planning coordinated attacks.

Police teams have visited fertilizer and chemical dealers for several days. โ€œWe are inspecting all districts and enforcing rules on regulated chemicals,โ€ a senior officer said. Officials are checking stock entries, verifying paperwork, and tracking every shipment to prevent diversion.

Ammonium Nitrate Inspections and Fertilizer Use

The region consumes around 2.27 lakh MT of fertilizer every year. Farmers use ammonium nitrate widely because it provides essential nitrogen. Manufacturers produce it by reacting ammonia with nitric acid.

However, the compound becomes dangerous when someone mixes it with fuel. That mixture can trigger powerful explosions. Investigators believe the Delhi blast, which killed 13 people, may have involved ammonium nitrate. This possibility prompted tighter ammonium nitrate inspections and closer oversight of chemical dealers.

Compliance Checks and Dealer Detentions

Police detained five fertilizer wholesalers from Nuh, Palwal and Sohna for supplying the material to the terror group.

Under the Ammonium Nitrate Rules, 2012, the chemical falls under the special-category explosive list. These rules require licences, accurate records, safe storage, and strict transport controls. Industrial use is also governed by the Industries (Development and Regulation) Act, 1951.

Police officers say current inspections aim to prevent any diversion of chemicals for unlawful activity. They added that they will act against any dealer who violates storage or documentation rules.

Need for Strict Chemical Control

Authorities urged fertilizer and chemical businesses to follow all regulations and maintain updated records. Tighter enforcement, they said, is essential to stop misuse of industrial chemicals.
