Dangote Fertiliser Expansion: Topsoe, Saipem, Thyssenkrupp & EIL Join as Key Contractors

Dangote Fertiliser Expansion

The Dangote Fertiliser Expansion has entered a powerful new stage as the Dangote Group forms strategic technical partnerships to support its upcoming fertiliser projects in Nigeria and Ethiopia. This effort strengthens Africaโ€™s agricultural ambition. Moreover, it reflects the Groupโ€™s long-term plan to improve food security, boost productivity, and raise the continentโ€™s role in the global fertiliser market.

With this new expansion, Dangote will increase Nigeriaโ€™s urea production from three million metric tons to nine million metric tons each year. The company currently operates two trains that deliver a combined output of three million tonnes. However, the addition of four modern trains will triple capacity and help Africa meet rising domestic and international fertiliser demand.

Dangote Fertiliser Expansion in Nigeria

Nigeria is set to benefit significantly from this growth. The new production trains will support farmers, stabilise urea availability, and reduce reliance on imported fertilisers. Furthermore, the expansion positions Nigeria as a major global supplier of premium-quality urea, strengthening its industrial presence.

A New $2.5 Billion Plant in Ethiopia

Meanwhile, Dangote is also developing a $2.5 billion fertiliser plant in Gode, Ethiopia. The Ethiopian facility will produce three million metric tons of urea annually. In addition, it will enhance regional food security and accelerate industrial development in the Horn of Africa.

Global Contractors Driving the Dangote Fertiliser Expansion

To build world-class plants, Dangote has chosen experienced global contractors. They will deliver advanced technology, reliable engineering, and high-efficiency systems across all projects.

Topsoe โ€“ Ammonia Technology Partner

Topsoe will license ammonia technology and supply full process design packages for six ammonia plants. Four plants will operate in Nigeria, while two will run in Ethiopia. Their advanced solutions support cleaner and more efficient production. Therefore, they play a crucial role in the projectโ€™s success.

Saipem โ€“ Urea Melt Technology Partner

Saipem will provide technology licensing and complete process design for urea melt units. Their long history in global fertiliser engineering ensures smooth delivery and strong technical performance. Consequently, Saipem strengthens the reliability of the entire system.

Thyssenkrupp UFT โ€“ Granulation Technology Partner

Thyssenkruppโ€™s UFT division will supply granulation technology and design packages needed for high-quality urea granules. Furthermore, their system improves product strength and ensures suitability for export markets.

Engineers India Limited โ€“ EPCM and Project Management

Engineers India Limited (EIL) will lead project management and EPCM services for the four fertiliser plants planned in Lekki, Nigeria. Their execution track record ensures faster timelines, better quality, and controlled project risks.

Impact of the Dangote Fertiliser Expansion

Overall, the expansion represents more than a capacity increase. It supports farmers, strengthens supply chains, and creates thousands of jobs. In addition, it boosts regional urea and ammonia availability, encourages industrial growth, and guides Africa toward agricultural independence.

As a result, the Dangote Fertiliser Expansion stands as a transformational step for both Nigeria and Ethiopiaโ€”one that will shape the continentโ€™s economic and food security landscape for decades.
