Fertiliser Prices and Subsidy Controlled by Central Government

Fertiliser prices and subsidy are decided entirely by the Central government, the Department of Agriculture clarified on Wednesday. The clarification aims to remove confusion among farmers regarding fertiliser pricing and subsidy distribution. Officials confirmed that state governments have no role in fixing fertiliser prices or subsidy rates.

Agriculture Director Manazir Jeelani stated that the Department of Fertilisers (DoF), under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, is solely responsible for determining fertiliser prices and subsidy allocations across the country.

Prices of Urea and DAP Remain Stable

The Central government has ensured that the prices of commonly used fertilisers such as urea and DAP remain unchanged. Prices of complex fertilisers have seen only a marginal increase. This step aims to protect farmers from sudden cost burdens during critical cropping seasons.

According to officials, the government currently provides a fertiliser subsidy of nearly ₹1.92 lakh crore to support farmers nationwide. This large allocation helps keep fertiliser prices affordable and stable.

Fertiliser Subsidy Under NBS Policy

Under the Nutrient-Based Subsidy Policy, subsidies on nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, and sulphur are reviewed twice every year. These reviews take place before the kharif and rabi seasons.

Based on this assessment, the Fertiliser Price Committee revises and notifies fertiliser prices under the Fertiliser Control Order. This mechanism ensures price transparency and uniformity across states.

Advisory Against Excessive Urea Use

Mr. Manazir Jeelani also cautioned farmers against excessive use of urea. He said overuse can reduce soil fertility and harm crops. It may also affect the environment and human health. Farmers were advised to use fertilisers in a balanced and judicious manner.

Strict Action Against Overpricing

To enforce compliance, authorities have formed special enforcement teams. These teams will act against dealers who sell fertilisers above prescribed rates or force farmers to buy unwanted products.

Farmers can file complaints with their nearest Mandal Agriculture Officer or through the toll-free helpline 155251. Officials assured that verified complaints will receive prompt action.
