India Strengthens Fertilizer Security as Four Cargo Ships Cross Strait of Hormuz

Fertilizer imports India

Fertilizer imports India received a major boost after four cargo vessels carrying Urea, DAP, and Sulphur successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are now heading toward key Indian ports. The fresh fertilizer shipments will strengthen India’s fertilizer inventory and support Kharif season demand across the country.

The vessels navigated through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz amid global trade uncertainties and are currently heading toward Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, Paradeep, and Mundra ports. Upon arrival, the cargoes will be discharged immediately to support fertilizer distribution across the country and strengthen existing inventory levels.

India Maintains Strong Fertilizer Stock Position

India’s total fertilizer inventory stood at 196.08 Lakh Tons (LMT) as of June 22, 2026, compared with 168.67 LMT during the same period last year, reflecting a significant improvement in fertilizer availability.

The higher inventory levels are expected to ensure uninterrupted fertilizer supplies during the peak agricultural season.

Fertilizer Sales Rise Amid Strong Agricultural Demand

Reflecting robust farm activity, fertilizer sales between March 1, 2026, and June 21, 2026, reached 153.4 LMT, up from 140.2 LMT recorded during the same period last year.

Major fertilizer sales during the period included:

  • Urea: 79.1 LMT
  • NPKs: 34.8 LMT
  • DAP (including TSP): 19.8 LMT

The increase of 13.2 LMT year-on-year highlights strong demand from the agriculture sector during the current Kharif season.

Domestic Production and Imports Support Supply Security

To protect farmers from volatility in international fertilizer markets, India has increased domestic fertilizer production while maintaining a steady flow of imports.

Domestic fertilizer production after the crisis period reached 133.12 LMT, while total fertilizer imports stood at 43.69 LMT. This balanced approach has helped maintain adequate inventories and ensure timely availability across states.

India Secures 17.70 LMT Urea Through Global Tenders

In a major procurement milestone, India has successfully contracted 17.70 LMT of Urea through recent global tenders.

With this addition, the country has secured more than 90 LMT of Urea and Phosphatic & Potassic (P&K) fertilizers from international markets for the ongoing Kharif season.

The procurement effort was supported through active coordination with 28 Indian Missions abroad, helping diversify sourcing channels and strengthen fertilizer supply security.
